About Us

The Northern Ireland Traumatic Brain Injury Forum was established in November 2001.  It consists of people who have had brain injury, carers, and people working in the head injury field.  We are a registered charity who receives no funding.  This website exists to facilitate the exchange of information, promote best practice in head injury services and to raise the awareness of the needs of people with head injury and their carers.  The need for such a forum was identified by delegates to a conference on head injury held in Limavady, Northern Ireland in 1997.  A steering group was set up in 2001 to establish the forum and the inaugural meeting was held in Lisburn, N.I in September 2001 during which the forum's constitution was formally adopted.  An action committee was elected from among the membership, tasked with planning and implementing the Forum's activities for the first year of operation.  There are now over 120 members throughout Northern Ireland.

Aims

We are an organisation that:

  • Brings together people across Northern Ireland with an interest in Brain Injury,
  • Ensures the voices of all people with brain injury and their families are heard,
  • Shares information and ideas on services and support for people with Brain Injury;
  • Supports the work of organisations and individuals involved in the provision of services to work towards a comparable comprehensive service throughout Northern Ireland.

We encompass service users, carers and professionals and have to date engaged in projects including a workshop on services for children with acquired brain injury leading to recommendations for service development.  Our priorities are to educate, inform and provide networking opportunities and to raise the profile of Acquired Brain Injury and campaign for better services.
